A hostile paradise

The Aether is the main dimension in both the original The Aether mod, and its sequel, the Aether II mod. This article only covers elements found in both The Aether mod and the Aether II mod. Like all dimensions, the Aether can generate infinitely. Aether Portals in the Overworld can be used to teleport to the Aether.

It is full of empty space, with islands in between each other. Along with normal clouds, groups of blocks generate in the sky, which are called Aerclouds.

Generation

Islands generate at a specific range of layers in the Aether, as a result, islands in the Aether tend to occupy an 'equator belt' of the Aether, not being able to generate above or below a certain threshold. Islands can vary in size, from barely being landmasses, to spanning thousands of blocks in distance. Mobs falling to their death is a very common, especially if a player flies below using Creative Mode, and not even Moas are safe. Overworld Aether Portals leading here will spawn the player at a common range of y layer.

With the exception of Gold Aerclouds, and Purple Aerclouds and Storm Aerclouds in The Aether II, Aerclouds can generate as low as 0 y and certain layers depending on The Aether or The Aether II. Purple and Storm Aerclouds instead follow the opposite, only spawning below 32 y. The very bottom of the Aether is technically considered The Void and going past it will cause the player to fall out of the Aether, be teleported back to the Overworld while high in the air, and land with nearly always fatal fall damage back to where their Aether Portal is.

In The Aether, islands generate at an average of 54 y but can reach as low as 18 y or as high as 90 y. Aether Portals will spawn at an average of 44 y. Cold Aerclouds can generate as high as 101 y, Gold Aerclouds generate at an average of 114 y but generate as low as 101 y or high as 127 y. The sky will begin to gradually darken (increasingly sized black specks, until nothing but black) the further a player flies down towards The Void. Going past -0 y will cause the sky to blacken completely, and going past -2 y will cause the player to fall into The Void.

In The Aether II, islands generate at an average of 58 y but can reach as low as 17 y or as high as 98 y. Aether Portals will spawn at an average of 46 y. Cold Aerclouds can generate as high as 98 y, Golden Aerclouds generate at an average of 110 y but generate as low as 98 y or high as 121 y. Purple and Stormclouds generate at an average of 16 y, but can generate as high as 31 y. Going past -1.6 y will cause the sky to blacken completely, and going past -2 y will cause the player to fall into The Void.

Day and night

Main article: Day-night cycle

In the original The Aether mod, the sun does not set until the Sun Spirit in a Gold Dungeon is killed, and then day-night cycles resume as normal. In the Aether II mod, a day-night cycle is fully present and functions just like in the Overworld, where the sun acts as a light source. At night, the moon is the only natural light source and hostile mobs spawn during the night or where lighting is not sufficient.
